Dibrugarh district lies in Upper Assam, on the south bank of the Brahmaputra, close to where the river enters the plains of the valley. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways records his birthplace as Mulukgaon; his Lok Sabha record places it in Bindhakata, within the jurisdiction of the Chabua police station.

The district's economy has long been associated with tea cultivation, oil and the river trade of the upper Brahmaputra; its headquarters town, Dibrugarh, is also the seat of the Lok Sabha constituency he represents today.

    President, All Assam Students' Union (AASU)

    The state-level student organisation that led the Assam Movement of 1979–1985 and signed the Assam Accord of 15 August 1985 with the Government of India and the Government of Assam.

  2. 1996–2000
    Chairman, North East Students' Organisation (NESO)

    A federation of student bodies from the north-eastern states.

  3. 2001
    Entry into electoral politics

    Joined the Asom Gana Parishad and was elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly from Moran.

Student organisations have held an unusual place in Assam's public life since the 1970s, and a number of the state's elected representatives came to politics through them.
