    Assam · 1992–1999

    Led the state's principal student organisation for seven years. He was also chairman of the North East Students' Organisation from 1996 to 2000.

    Member, Assam Legislative Assembly

    Moran constituency · 2001–2004 · Asom Gana Parishad

    Joined the Asom Gana Parishad in 2001 and was elected to the Assembly in the same year — his first elected office.

  3. 2004

    Member of Parliament, 14th Lok Sabha

    Dibrugarh, Assam · 2004–2009

    Elected to the Lok Sabha from Dibrugarh. During this term, in July 2005, the Supreme Court decided his petition against the IMDT Act, 1983, and struck the Act down.

    Joins the Bharatiya Janata Party

    February 2011 · State president, Assam, from 2012

    Left the Asom Gana Parishad in January 2011 and joined the BJP the following month. He later led the party's Assam unit as state president.

    Member of Parliament, 16th Lok Sabha; Minister of State (Independent Charge)

    Lakhimpur, Assam · Union Council of Ministers

    Elected from Lakhimpur and appointed Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Skill Development, Entrepreneurship, Youth Affairs and Sports. From 9 November 2014 his charge was Youth Affairs and Sports (Independent Charge), held until May 2016.

  7. 2016

    Chief Minister of Assam

    Majuli constituency · sworn in 24 May 2016 at Khanapara, Guwahati

    Elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly from Majuli in the 2016 election, results of which were declared on 19 May. He was sworn in as the state's Chief Minister five days later and held the office until May 2021.

  9. 2021

    Union Cabinet Minister — Ports, Shipping and Waterways; AYUSH

    Sworn in 7 July 2021 · Rajya Sabha, Assam, from 27 September 2021

    Re-elected from Majuli on 2 May 2021, he resigned as Chief Minister on 9 May. On 7 July he was sworn in as a Cabinet Minister with charge of Ports, Shipping and Waterways and of AYUSH. He was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Assam on 27 September and resigned his Assembly seat the next day.

  11. 2024

    Member of Parliament, 18th Lok Sabha; Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways

    Dibrugarh, Assam · results 4 June 2024 · portfolio allocated 10 June 2024

    Returned to the Lok Sabha from Dibrugarh in the 2024 general election, vacating his Rajya Sabha seat. Sworn in again on 9 June 2024, he was allocated the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways on 10 June — the office he holds as of September 2026.
